Brief Profile :
Dr
Manish Nagpal
finished his schooling from
St Xaviers High School in
1988 and eventually cleared
MBBS in 1993 from B J
Medical College, Ahmedabad ,
Diploma Ophthalmology (DO)
in 1994 and eventually MS in
1996 from M & J Western
Regional Institute of
Ophthalmology . After that
he passed the Basic Science
ICO exam in 1996 and the
FRCS (Edin) in March 1997.
During this period he also
did clinical attachments at
centres in United Kingdom
such as Moor fields Eye
Hopital, Oxford eye
infirmary and Nottingham
Queens Medical Centre with
Prof Harminder Dua.
After that
he joined Retina Foundation,
Ahmedabad as a Retina fellow
in 1997 and from 1999 has
been working there as a
Vitreo Retinal Consultant
since then.
During this
period he has travelled
extensively and visited the
clinics of premier Vitreo
Retinal surgeons across the
globe such as Steve
Charles, Robert Wendell,
Carl Claes, Claus Eckardt,
Bernt Kirchoff, Hilel Lewis,
Peter Kaiser, Susanna
Binder, Zdenig Gregor,
Ferenc Kuhn, Borja
Corcostogui , Garcia Arumi
etc to enhance surgical
skills
He has been
invited to do live surgery
and laser demonstrations at
various centres in India and
abroad such as Nepal,
Malaysia and Singapore. He
has extensive publications
in many peer review journals
and has done pioneering work
within India on
Transpupillary
Thermotherapy, Macular
Translocation Surgery,
Feeder Vessel treatment,
Radial optic Neurotomy ,
Sheath decompression surgery
and small gauge vitrectomy
such as 25 and 23 gauge. He
has various chapter
publications in
international books. He has
been a reviewer for Indian
Journal of ophthalmology for
the last six years. He also
reviews for the Journal EYE
from UK, European journal of
Ophthalmology as well as
Clinical and Experimental
Ophthalmology from New
Zealand.. He is the
Retina editor of the Indian
edition of Ophthalmology
World Times (OWT) as
well as the Indian edition
of Ocular surgery news (OSN)
He is a member of the All
India Ophthalmic Society (AIOS),
Vitreo Retinal Society of
India (VRSI), Indian Society
of Cataract and Refractive
society(ISCRS) American
Academy of Ophthalmology. He
is a
International member of the
American academy of
Ophthalmology (AAO)
since 2000 and American
Society of Retinal Surgeons
(ASRS) since 2007. He has
also been a inspector for
DNB for recognition of
institutions for DNB
candidature. He has
presented Posters,
Instruction courses and
booth talks at the
International Council of
Ophthalmology , AAO and APAO
meetings regularly. He is
also a approved guide for
the FNB candidates training
at Retina Foundation for a
two year post doctoral
Vitreo Retinal fellowship.
Apart from this he is a
regular guide to the
fellowship program at Retina
Foundation
He has a keen
interest in making surgical
videos and has won several
awards in state and country
meetings for video
presentations. He has been
awarded the Best paper of
the retina sessions at All
India Ophthalmological
society 4 times. He
regularly presents a video
at the reputed Frankfurt
Retina meeting in the
participants section. He
conducted a course at the
American academy of
ophthalmology meeting on
Video Making Tips in 2005
and 2007.
He has
conducted about

Surgical Live demo workshops
at Retina foundation over a
period of 8 years and
has conducted various
international symposiums on
Retina and Vitreous and
Information technology for
Ophthalmologists including
co chairing the 59th
Detachment course conducted
by Ingrid Kreissig. He has a
keen interest in spreading
education about information
technology in our field and
has published articles
related to the same in IJO
and Ophthalmology Clinics of
North America. He was one of
the founder members of a
interactive website
isurgeons.com which was very
popular with over 8000 eye
surgeons all over the
world.
He also works
closely with reputed firms
like Alcon, Optimedica,
Iridex and Heidelberg in
spreading new concepts about
upcoming instrumentation and
technology. He is one of the
international advisors to
Alcon for development of new
technology by the company.
He has been invited by Alcon
to participate in the Asia
REACT held at Sydney and the
International REACT meeting
held in Switzerland. He has
been recently invited by
Optimedica to give talks on
his experience with the new
generation PASCAL laser at
Malaysia, Taiwan and Phillipines
.
