At the
outset I welcome you all
to this 27th
Annual meeting of the
Eye Research Centre,
Ahmedabad. It gives me
great pleasure in
presenting this Annual
report of the Eye
Research Center with the
audited accounts for the
year 2006-2007. It
apprises you of the
various activities
carried out from 1st
April’ 2006 to 31st
March 2007.
[1] Community Extension
Services
Dr P N
Nagpal with other eye
surgeons visited
Chikhodra and examined
patients. Some of the
surgical procedures were
carried out at
Chikhodra Eye Hospital.
The patients who
required extensive and
more complicated surgery
were brought here and
needful done. Table no.
1 shows the frequency of
the visit.

this rural and the free
service program of the
Eye Research Center,
we have examined
659 cases and
carried out
1932 major and
minor surgical
procedures either
here or at Chikhodra Eye
Hospital and all
free of cost.
The different procedures
that were carried out

No. 2. We are thankful

Fluorescein Angiography
was carried out at
Chikhodra Eye Hospital
when needed. An IRIS
diode laser at
Chikhodra allows us to
provide laser treatment
over there. A new green
532nm wavelengths & a B
scan has also been added
there.
We
continue to have beds
for these patients. The
bed strength is reduced
because of day surgery
trends.
[2] Collaboration with
Foundation Engineering
workshop
The
Foundation Workshop with
the help of the engineer
Mr Naresh Adiecha and an
ophthalmologist Dr Amrut
Patel has been
collaborating with us to
develop instruments and
appliances to maintain
the equipments.

number of video films
were prepared covering
different aspects of eye
surgery like –,
Proliferative
vitreoretinopathies, 25
gauge vitrectomy, 23
gauge vitrectomy,
Bimanual surgery using
chandelier illumination,
Giant Retinal Tears,
Choroidal detachments
and drainage,
Intravitreal
Triamcinolone for
staining of Hyaloid,
Limbal autographs,
Combined Penetrating
Keratoplasty with BMV
using Keratoprosthesis ,
DSAEK, DALK, PK etc
These
films were exhibited at
various conferences and
workshops. Many of such
films were duplicated
for giving it to various
institutions for
exhibition. This helped
in propagation of
advancements in
ophthalmic surgery.

books, Journals and
magazines related to
Ophthalmology were added
to the Library this
year.

The
museum of
ophthalmology which
was started before
10 years continues
to add various rare
gadgets from the
past. It has been
visited by various
ophthalmologists
from India and
abroad. They
appreciated the
efforts for this
purpose. (Is
redesigned,
relocated and re
organized with new
additions this year
with inputs from Dr
Ashish Nagpal)

Air Bus
The
Air Bus , our 100
seater auditorium
continues to be
utilized for all the
academic activities
and has all the
“state of the art”
facilities.

Computer services
Computer
services have been
updated in clinical as
well as academic and
administrative areas.
Net work LAN connections
have been established
between various sections
to improve efficient
data retrieval and
transfer, apart from
installation of new EMR
and Billing software.
We
continue to provide
e-mail and internet
access at the institute.

Investigations
Supratech
laboratories continues
to provide pathology
service within our
premises. The patients
blood, urine etc samples
are collected at the
hospital itself without
having to go to the
laboratory outside We
are thankful to Dr
Sandeep Shah
and
Dr
Bhavini Shah
of
Supratech
laboratories
for helping the poor
patients for ERC by
doing the pre-op
investigation free. We
are extremely grateful
for the free services
rendered by physicians
Dr
Harsh Toshniwal
and
Dr Kothari
of Bharti Vallabh
hospital to all our ERC
patients who require
medical attention and
pre operative
assessments.
[12] Vision Enhancement
Centre
The
facility for low vision
aids continue to serve
the patients who have
poor vision so as to
help them read and write
and continue to maintain
a good quality of life
despite the handicap.
The centre also
dispenses the routine
spectacles and contact
lenses and for all this
we have acquired the
specialized services of
Dr
Ravinder Singh
and
Mr
Manber Dang .We
now have a unique
collection of Low
vision aids on display
which have been acquired
from various parts of
the world and we also
have exclusive rights
for some of these
companies. We have
received inquiries from
different parts of the
countries as well as
some from outside for
the same. Devices needed
for protection from
occupational ocular
hazard are also
available.
[13] Pharmacy
For the
benefit of the patients
we have extended the
facility of a pharmacy
within the premises
which now provides all
the ophthalmic drugs and
medicines. The facility
is used by ERC patients
too and in many cases
free of cost.
[14] Paediatric
Ophthalmology Clinic and
Glaucoma
A
paediatric ophthalmology
& glaucoma clinic is
being run by Dr Kamal
Nagpal along with the
help of an expert
orthoptist Mr Goyal. It
is being utilized by a
lot of patients. Medical
and surgical treatment
of glaucoma, orthoptic
treatment and surgical
treatment of strabismus
are the key functions of
this facility.

(I) Public Awareness
Activities
- “Run
for Sight”
was held to
commemorate the
cause of Eye
Donation on
occasion of “Eye
Donation Day – 8th
September ” at Law
Garden Ahmedabad on
8th
September 06.
- Honorable
Mayor Mr. Amit Shah
Flagged the
“Run for Sight”
from OPP GLS Gate,
Law Garden
Ahmedabad.
- The
“Run for
Sight” was
addressed by His
Excellency the
Governor of Gujarat
Shri Nawal Kishore

- Eye
Donation Awareness
also created by
involving – Door
Darshan, Radio
Mirchi & The Press.
- Film
on Eye Donation in
Gujarati developed
for the commissioner
of Health to
generate awareness.
